Tamoxifen

hi- i have been taking Tamoxifen for a couple of years now & really suffering from hot flushes / night sweats absolutley drenched ... my surgeon told me my breast cancer was driven by estrogen . i am waiting for my GP to tell me if i am actually going through the menopause or im just having a side effect from the tablets - if i am going through the menopause would having my ovaries taken away stop my estrogen so i can stop taking the tamoxifen as i feel i cannot cope with it anymore its effecting every aspect of my daily life

thank you ;)

  • Hi , sorry to hear that you’re suffering . I’m on Letrozole ( similar side effects) . Hope the following might help: My Gp prescribed Citalopram for hot flushes ( they are a mild anti depressant but help flushes) . I got a pet mat from B&M ( yes I know) it’s a cool mat which I put into the fridge & then into my pillowcase at night , about £6 . I also have a fan on and the window open , and carry a fan everywhere ! Good luck xx

  • thanks for your reply hun- yep got the exact same pet mat, although  i have to take it off at night & was it as drenched, put a towel down that gets soaked & foever washing bedding - im loosing so much water its unreal- i wake up & my fingers look like ive been sat in the bath all day long(wrinclely) im currently sat in the office no aircon just my fans - there must be something out there that can help people like us - its dreadful ay xx

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are having treatment for breast cancer. The hot flushes you are having must be difficult to live with.

I am not sure if having your ovaries removed will mean that you can stop taking Tamoxifen. This is because even if your ovaries are removed or stop working (as in the menopause) the body still makes oestrogen although to a far lesser degree. This is because oestrogen is also made in fat cells and the adrenal glands.  So, even if you had your ovaries removed it is likely that you would still need to take hormonal treatment.

Do let your breast care team know about the side effects of your treatment.  I am not sure if it will be possible and if it will help but once you are past the menopause you may be offered another type of hormonal treatment called aromatise inhibitors, although they can also cause hot flushes it may be better than what you are feeling now or it may not make a difference.

You can read about the different types of hormonal treatments and their side effects on our website here.

We also have information about coping with hot flushes on our website  here.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
