Smear Test

Hello

Im hoping someone can perhaps help me a little as I am worried sick.

Yesterday I went for a smear - I advised that over the past 4 weeks I have been spotting which has never happened ( I am 43yrs). The nurse said she will take a look and do some extra swabs.

A couple of minutes in she asked if she could call her colleague in to take a look at something as this point I knew something wasn't right.

The other nurse came in and looked - She said there was bump and not to worry "she thinks" it could be a polyp but I would have to be referred to the cancer clinic to take a closer look.

What I am worried is I have looked online ( I know I shouldn't have done that just made myself worse) and it says a Dr or Nurse would know if it was or wasn't a polyp - So I am wondering was she just saying polyp so I dont worry to much before my appointment - All other people on here have said "Nurse found a polyp" my nurse said she thinks so I really am thinking now was she just being nice. My appointment is next Thursday -  Also a lot on here have said they dont get an urgent referal just for a polyp? Any comments would be most appreciated - Thank you xxx

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are having these concerns about your health since your smear, but I do not feel we are going to be able to help.

It can be difficult for health professionals to always be 100 percent certain about what they can see on examination, which is why a referral for further investigation is needed. The nurse felt she could see a polyp, but further assessment would be needed by a doctor to confirm that, so she has referred you in to the system.

Waiting for follow up appointments or tests can increase anxiety, so it can be tempting to look online. Unfortunately googling can cause more stress as although peoples situations can seem similar, everyone's experience is individual to them.

Take care and if you want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah
