What to ask?

I have an appointment coming up for results of an excisional biopsy on a breast lump. The biopsy showed Fibroadenoma with lobular neoplasia and the letter stated B3 lesion with atypia which is indeterminate or could possibly be cancer.

I know it will depend somewhat on what the histopathology of the whole lump shows, but can you give me some advice on questions I should ask at my appointment?

Do you know how much having lobular neoplasia increases the risk of breast cancer?

I keep going through different scenarios in my head where the Dr says different things. The waiting is making me unstable!!!!! Urgh!

Thank you for reading

  • Dear Moo41, thank you for posting.

Lobular neoplasia or Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) are breast cells that have become abnormal. They can increase your chances of breast cancer in the future, but most women with LCIS will not get cancer.

There is information on LCIS on our website here and on the Breast Cancer Now charity site here.  From the links you will read that there are different ways that LCIS can be treated and monitored, so reading through these may help you feel more informed before your appointment.

Once they have the full biopsy results your doctors will have decided at an Multi disciplinary team meeting to decide what needs to happen next. This is what may be discussed at your appointment.

Waiting for more news and results can be a tricky time, hopefully you will know more about what is happening soon.

Take care Moo41 and if you find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
