Mum - stage 4 ovarian cancer

My mum was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in 2021, she had chemotherapy and they managed to get her ca125 levels really low.  The oncologist has given mum a break from her chemotherapy but her levels have started rising again and she now has been called in to discuss her scan results.    I'm out of my mind with worry.

She only had a scan a few months previous, so how much could things have changed within those few months on a scan.

Since hearing this mum has seemed to go a bit down hill, she isn't eating so much and she seems worn out.  I just didn't think things could change so suddenly.

Would they put mum back on chemotherapy again?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate your concern. The doctors will assess your mum, as to whether she can cope with further treatment at the moment. It is important that they know that she is struggling to eat, and has fatigue. They can sometimes prescribe some anti-sickness medication, and/or a short course of steroids, which can stimulate appetite. They can also prescribe some fortified supplement drinks as well.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you what they will say about her scan and what this means. But they will want her to be able to have a reasonable quality of life, and this is a difficult balance when considering treatment such as chemotherapy. Sometimes, doctors can prescribe a lower dose of chemotherapy, so that it is tolerated better by the patient.
