Cervical lesion

Told by GP I had been referred as urgent to gynae as she found a lesion on the cervix. Told me I should be seen within 2 to 4 weeks. I called the hospital today as I didn't want to miss the appointment and as my daughter is getting married next week I was worried I would be called. I was told by the out patients dept that the consultant had down graded me to a general appointment as I don't have cancer! My GP could not rule this out and the lesion has grown in size since she last noticed it. I DCIS  breast 7yrs ago and partial hysterectomy 12yrs ago. Should I be worried or just bide my time and wait for an appointment? How can the consultant know what's best for me if he hasn't seen ne? I am confused, worried and upset. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA.

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

Unfortunately there are strains on the NHS at the moment that are causing huge impacts on referrals. The hospital teams are triaging all referrals as they come through, but I understand you are worried.

I would recommend you make contact with the GP who referred you to let them know that this has happened. If the hospital gave you an idea of the wait time for general gynaecological appointments then do let your GP know. If they want you seen sooner it may be that they need to refer you again with more information, refer you for another investigation like a colposcopy or send the referral to another hospital. Do check with them that all of your medical history was on the form.

Take care and I hope this gets sorted for you soon. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.

  • Thank you for the advice. My GP has re referred me today.
