9.5 stone to 6.7 since December

Hello

This time last year my Mum was out walking in the Lakes with me. Now sue am barely stand up for 15 minutes without exhaustion.

Does this colossal weight loss mean that we’re heading in one direction fast? She barely eats. She’s often retching. Can this go on for months? I really don’t want her to go on for months like this.

  • Hello Lisalou, has you mum been to see her GP?

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your mum. It must be very hard for you to see her looking so exhausted.

Without being involved in her care it is difficult for me to say very much about her weight loss and feelings of exhaustion. With your mum's permission, you may find it helpful to talk this through with the nurses and doctors involved in her care. It may be helpful to have a phone conversation with the team involved in her care.

Do let them know how exhausted she is feeling. They may want to do some blood tests to see if there is a cause for some of her symptoms.

You may also want to talk to her GP about getting some high-calorie drinks on prescription to help her weight loss and help boost her energy. You could also talk to her GP about your concerns. Her hospital will have written explaining her future care and her next steps. We do have some tips on making your own drinks and diet problems when someone has cancer. It has useful tips on how to boost a patient's diet. Have a look here and here

Do give us a ring if you want to talk things through. It is important that you get some support for yourself as looking after someone with cancer can be exhausting.

Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
