Hi,

I just had a picc line inserted on Thursday and have been having little sharp pains in my chest and my shoulder aches.not all the time only every now and again. Is paracetamol ok to take for this and is this normal?

  • Hi Laura and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about the pains you've been having in your chest and shoulder and for the worry this is causing.

I just wanted to let you know that our nurses work Monday - Friday. They will reply to you as soon as they can next week but if you're hoping to get an answer to your question today, then I'd recommend contacting your out of hours GP or the NHS on their 111 service.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello and thanks for your post

It's quite common to get some discomfort in the chest and shoulder region following a PICC line insertion. Taking a mild painkiller such as paracetamol should help.

If the pain gets worse or the wound area looks inflamed or swollen then do speak to your specialist team or GP for further advice.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
