5 year check up for non hodgekins lymphoma

My dad has been cancer free for 4 years as per the blood tests he has been going to yearly , he went to his 5 year check up and mentioned any concerns he might have with kidneys etc they have done a biopsy of the abdomen and a Ct scan and another pet Ct contract scan a few days after this  . Is this normal procedure for 5 year check up or would they only do this if they see something on the scan ?

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

It is very difficult without being involved in your dad's to know why he was having the various tests done.

It is not uncommon to have scans at regular intervals when a past cancer is being monitored.  I am not sure why they then went on to biopsy his abdomen. It is really only his own doctors who can provide him with that information. Do encourage your dad to discuss why he is having these tests with his doctor if he is unsure.

You may find it more helpful to attend the next appointment with your dad so you can understand more if he is happy for you to be there.

His GP is also another source of information. The results of any tests or investigations will be sent to his GP.

I hope that you find out more soon.

If you feel that it would be helpful to ring and chat any of this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a ring. Our Freephone helpline number is 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thanks for your response it was very helpful . Also his results will not be in person and a phone call tomorrow , I am guessing they wouldn’t confirm cancer on the phone wouldn’t they if it came back or this is just depending on the hospital ?

  • Hello and thanks for your further post

Biopsy results can be given to patients in several different ways including over the telephone even if it is cancer. It is impossible to second guess what they are going to tell your dad.

But the main thing now is you will both know very soon.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
