How long for results

Hi I have had an internal scan and an MRI . Initially they found a complex cyst with solid mass/malignancy which needed further investigation to determine its nature. The consult said the only real way to be sure was to take it out with surgery.   There has been no mention of a biopsy i think due to my age, Im 60.  The MRI found i have previous endometriosis, cysts on both ovaries with a 4 cm tumour in one that is still indeterminable and I have been booked in for a hysterectomy in 2 weeks.  How long after surgery can i expect to know the results and if this is cancer.  I find having as much information as possible helps manage the stress.  Many thanks.

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation and I can understand that waiting for any results can be unsettling.

It is difficult to be too specific about timings for when you will get your results as there are variations up and down the country. The surgeon will be able to discuss your surgery and what they found when they see you after your surgery but they will need to wait for the pathologist to review your tissue under a microscope.

All patients with suspected cancer are reviewed at a formal meeting where all the doctors involved in your care review all your results. This meeting usually happens once a week. I would discuss this with your doctors before your surgery when you are likely to know more. They will hopefully be able to give you a more accurate picture based on the timings of other patients at your hospital.

We do have some information about recovery after a radical hysterectomy which you can see here

Try if you can to take one day at a time and not overthink it all for now.

If you would find it helpful to ring and chat with one of the helpline nurses then you are very welcome to do so. Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,
