HPV negative, smear sample not tested for abnormal cells, even though they were abnormal 5 years ago.

Hi

5 years ago my smear test result came back 'borderline abnormal cells' but hpv negative, so I was classed as low risk for developing cervical cancer.  I have just got my results of my latest smear test back, to find that because I tested negative for hpv again, they didnt even test my sample for abnormal cells.

I knew that this was possible, so I explained to the nurse that did the smear, that I had to have cin3 cells removed many years ago ( before they started testing for hpv), so I was a bit paranoid with regard to cell changes that had started happening again, she was going to make a note on the form, that I had prior history and that they may hopefully then test the sample.

I realise that hpv causes the majority of cervical cancer, but that is not a cast iron guarantee is it?

Do you know whether if I paid for a smear test to be done privately, would it get tested properly or would they just go to the same labs, and therefore only get checked for hpv?

For reference, I am 55 years old, 8 months since my last period, with no signs of any problems, I just would feel reassured to be properly screened.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Annie

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry that you have concerns about your recent smear test.

Abnormal cells can occasionally be present in the cervix without HPV, this could be due to irritation, infection, hormone changes or growths (polyps). But, it is only when HPV is present that we have learnt that abnormal cells have the potential to become troublesome.

The cervical screening programme is built on a national algorithm, that many years of research and rationale has created, with the focus on prevention. Be reassured that if there was a concern about your smear, or the nurse taking the sample felt anything looked untoward to the naked eye, you would have been referred to colposcopy.

I do not know how a private smear test would be examined in the labs. The nurse or doctor performing it would be able to go through that with you.

Take care and please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number is 0808 800 4040, from 9 till 5, Mon to Fri.

    Sarah.

  • Thanks Sarah

That reassures me, 5 years ago my hormones were all over the place, probably pre-menopausal, hopefully that was the cause of the slight changes.  I will relax until my next one is due, unless anything changes.
