Frightened after smear test

Hi, I recently had my smear test at the examination the nurse went to get the gp to come in and look as she said my cervix is red and inflammed. He came in looked asked me question about irregular bleeding bleeding after sex all of which I answered no to. He said it could be from previous lletz surgery I had 7 years ago, this hasn't been mentioned in previous smear tests. Is it normal to have a red inflammed scar from lletz years after the procedure?

  • Hello B-ex and thanks for posting,

I'm afraid I am not sure how normal it is to have a red inflamed scar years after a LLETZ procedure. From what I have read, once the skin has healed up after a LLETZ it often looks paler than it did before, but inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis) can occur in any woman regardless of having had a LLETZ in the past - I don't know if having a LLETZ makes it more common.

I am not sure if the GP or nurse mentioned it, but infection is probably the most common cause of cervicitis, they may want to look into this but it can occur with no infection.

I'm afraid I can't explain your nurse or doctor's thinking but since you say you are frightened, it would be a good idea to get hold of one of them to go over whatever they said and hopefully get some reassurance. Bear in mind that cervical screening is all about prevention and that although the appearance of the cervix can sometimes be out of the ordinary, this doesn't have to mean anything serious is the matter.
