My father stage 4 prostate

Hello everyone I’ve come on here for a bit of clarity.

my father who is in early 50s has been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer on one side with his levels at 9 and the other side is 7 I think he said. He’s been told it’s incurable but it’s also spread, to his pelvic bone, pubic bone, ribs, spine and lung, he has a chemo consultation at the end of the month and they don’t seem to be rushing him in for treatment. He’s a joking sort of guy and keeps saying it’s Usain Bolt running around inside him with how it’s spreading etc we’re quite with him on that in terms of the humour side obviously it’s his way of dealing with it. And if it helps I will do it with him too. Doesn’t make it easier for me and it’s really difficult as you could imagine knowing it’s incurable. Now my question is will chemo give him 10 months or 10 years what is the sort of chances of it helping him. He was diagnosed last month with prostate and since it’s spread to places explained. Please any help or support on this would be fantastic

  • Hello and thanks for posting on the forum

I am sorry to hear about your dad. I can understand that this must be a very unsettling time for your family as you wait to find out more about his treatment.

Prognosis is a difficult thing to predict and a question that is best answered by the doctors involved in his care. They may be able to give you an idea based on other patients with a similar cancer, but even they will find it difficult to predict how long someone has got. A lot will depend on your dad's general health and how he responds to any chemotherapy he is given.

We have some information about treatment options for metastatic prostate cancer which you might all find helpful to read before his appointment here

We have some more information on the types of chemotherapy that your dad may have here. There is some more information from the charity ProstateUK here.

As your dad's bones have been affected the doctors may consider giving him some bone-strengthening drugs which you can read more about here

Your dad may be interested in a support organisation called Tackle. They enable men with prostate cancer to set up support groups. There may already be one in his area or he may want to start one of his own. It can help to meet other men going through a similar experience. Have a look at their details here

I am not sure where your dad is living but if his hospital is near a maggie's centre he may want to pop in to see what they offer. They offer online and face-to-face support which can include information on starting chemotherapy and help with diet and exercise.

I hope that some of these links may be helpful. If you or your dad would like to ring and discuss any of this, you are more than welcome to give one of the nurses a ring on the helpline.

Our number is freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
