Positive FIT Test and worsening symptoms

Hi There,

I'm reaching out as my lovely husband has recently had news (following some scary symptoms) that he's had a positive FIT test (200>) and has been referred for a colonoscopy in 2*weeks time. His symptoms seems to be getting worse as each day goes past - I fully expect the stress of the wait has some part to play especially where anything digestive is concerned but I'm not sure really how to process the speed in which things seems to be worsening. (stomach pains etc) vs how he was when he did the first sample.

I suppose like everyone on the chat I'm just looking out for guidance!!

  • Hello there wife2023 and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms your husband is experiencing and imagine this is an anxious time for you both.

As I am sure you are aware the FIT test is able to detect microscopic blood that cannot be seen in the stools. If a FIT test is positive it means that blood above a certain amount was found that needs further investigation.

A change in bowel habit alongside stomach pains and blood can be caused by several different things including inflammatory bowel conditions such as irritable bowel, crohns and ulcerative colitis, infection, severe food intolerances and in some cases cancer.

The colonoscopy (a tiny camera on a thin tube )is the best way of looking inside the bowel to try and find the cause of the bleeding and other symptoms he is having. During and after the procedure the doctor may discuss what they can see and their thoughts but usually biopsies ( tissue samples) are also taken to be sent off to be tested.

Times like this are never easy and as you say when people are worried it can make symptoms appear worse. Keeping busy and the mind on other things can help pass the time whilst waiting.

Do get back in touch if you have more questions or give us a call on 0808 800 4040, weekdays 9-5 if you prefer

I hope you both know more soon and that everything turns out ok for your husband.

    Take care

    Naomi
