Negative lymph nodes

Hi

My husband saw the Consultant 20th June for throat problems . On examination, an irregular mass on the left base of tongue reaching up to the midline. The consultant sent him for an scans MRI and CT on the 21st, and pre- biopsy testing on 24th..so, like a whirlwind. He has had his panedoscopy. On the consultants letter we received this morning it said my husband has been upgraded onto cancer pathway, there were also  two Macmillan nurses brought in on his appointment.,..so very worried, but, in the letter it did say neck negative for lymph nodes....so, does that mean cancer is not now suspected?

Thank you.

  • Can I ask what his symptoms for throat problems was? I also went ENT referal cancer pathway camera down nose left tonsil slightly inflamed and got mri for tomrorow. I kept getting persistent sore throat with white pus finally strep that antibiotics would work but would come back after a week.

  • Hi,

He has had an intermittent sore throat since Christmas, hoarseness, feeling like there was something in his throat, and intermittently choking on food ( rather like something has gone down the wrong way)

He has had the panedoscopy last week, so, now we wait..

Hope you're not waiting too long for answers

    Xxx

  • Oh the waiting is the horrible part, Iv been going crazy just waiting I had blood tests done 3weeks ago and when I call ENT reception she’s like he won’t give you results until everything ones back, and on another conversation he won’t talk to you until your next appointment. I was booked a follow up appointment before my MRI letter came through.

I hope you get good news soon from my understanding negative node means it has not affected the lymph nodes. I could be wrong. Xxx

  • Thank you Sweet cheeks 5....yes, I think the waiting is the worst part of this horrible episode....although, I have to say, it was a crazy week last week,  cat scan, MRI and biopsy all done in the space of a week....thank you again, I am taking the negative lymph nodes as a very good sign. ...and fingers crossed for you for a speedy and positive outcome xxx

  • Fingers crossed .  Keep us posted on how he gets on. Hoping and wishing for best positive results for both Of us xxx

  • Will do, and yes, positive vibes all round....I really hope your wait is nearly over, it's horrible for your mental health...xxxxx

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate that it is a stressful time for you both at the moment.

There are usually various different tests used to obtain enough detailed clinical information to make a diagnosis. Being on the cancer pathway does mean that cancer is suspected, hence all the investigations so far. Part of thoroughly assessing someone, is to assess whether or not cancer is detected in the neck lymph nodes. This is part of the process of 'staging' a cancer, as in knowing the extent (size and spread) of the cancer from its original site (the primary). This information helps the doctors plan the most appropriate treatment plan once all the clinical information is available to them.

I hope this has been of help, and that you get to find out more soon,

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Vanda

  • So I had my mri today and was told Il hear from the doctor in 2weeks about results but as Iv gone on my patient portal it says results pending 6th august surely that’s a long time to wait for results….

  • Hello Sweetcheeks5 and thanks for getting back to us,

Some scans and tests are flagged as being urgent and some are routine,  I think with either the amount of time if takes for the results to be reported can depend on the capacity in the NHS. I'm afraid I don't know when your MRI results will come back - I am not really sure what the pending date means in your patient portal. It may be that you will hear from the doctor in 2 weeks as you were told.

Waiting for results is inevitably stressful, perhaps give it the 2 weeks that was mentioned and if you haven't heard by then try and chase it up.

For now, try not to dwell on the results and do what works for you to distract yourself.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
