blood in stool really worried

I'm 19 and a couple of days ago I had blood in my stool. I arranged an appointment with my GP but unfortunately missed the phone call. He sent me a text saying as a one off its usually nothing to worry about and to check that I'm not constipated (I'm not). But I'm worried because I forgot to mention that for several months now I have also been having softer bowel movements, not every time, just perhaps more often than usual. Obviously before the blood I wasn't that worried because I know at my age that that isn't usually a problem. But now I have seen blood I am really scared. Is it weird to arrange yet another appointment? I feel bad as I missed several phone calls but I was very busy and also for some reason even though my phone was't on silent and the volume was up it didn't ring. Is it possible this is still nothing serious? Yesterday I also experienced some itching which I know is a sign of haemorrhoids so maybe it is just that but I'm still worried as the blood combined with the looser bowel movements makes it more concerning.

  • Hello there

It can be a worry to see blood in your poo but as you have said yourself alongside some itching this could well be the result of haemorrhoids or a small cut around your back passage.

At your age any cancer would be extremely rare and there really is likely to be a far less serious cause for this. However do monitor the situation and if you notice blood again a continuing change in your bowel habits or remain concerned do go back and arrange another appointment.

If necessary the doctor can examine you and arrange some tests but try not to over think the situation for now if you can.

    Take care
