Urgent gynaecology referral but colposcopy referral cancelled

I've been having light to mid spotting after intercourse and throughout my cycle for over 2 months now I take cerazette and don't really have periods so it's certainly been an annoyance. My gp took swabs and blood which came back fine other than thrush. She referred me for pelvic ultrasound as I was also getting slight twinges and I said I was getting slight urge incontinence at times also. The sonogrspher said she couldn't see anything untoward but said ring the doctors if not heard by the next week. I have also been keeping a diary of when the bleeding happens and also noticed that sometimes a bowel movement csn cause bleeding too.

I was then told by gp message that due to some unusual appearance on scan, she was awaiting gynaecology advice. Then I received 2 referrals one for colposcopy and the other general gynaecology. I then had my colposcopy referral cancelled (according to the consultant my post coital bleeding needed to be persistent! It's 7/10 usually it happens!) I had a cervical ectropian a few years ago and I was seen then to have it cauterised so I don't know why this needs to be cancelled.

I was told by gynaecology today I'd expect to hear about an appt for their referral within 30 days as I'm on the urgent waiting list. So it's likely in not going to be seen for at least a month and now I'm worried sick.

Has anyone had something similar

  • Hello RachLou84 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you are waiting to be seen by the gynaecology team. I understand that ongoing unexplained symptoms can be unnerving. Bear in mind that there are several possible explanations for post coital (after sex) bleeding and try to keep an open mind about whatever the cause is - although it needs to be reported to the doctor, most of the time post coital bleeding isn't because of cervical cancer.

I am not sure what the scan picked up or if it is linked to the bleeding - it might not be.

I assume the consultant you mentioned is based at the colposcopy clinic and reviewed all the details provided by the GP when you were referred - there may be other things that they took into account aside from the bleeding. But after you have been assessed by gynaecology if they think you need to have a colposcopy they should be able to arrange it.

As the GP wants the gynaecology team to look into this there may not be much more you can find out for now. I realise having to wait can be worrying and it is hard not to overthink things. Do whatever works for you to manage to inevitable stress of 'not knowing' and try not to anticipate what they will say. Very often referrals are made to rule out cancer and be on the safe side. I hope this turns out to be what happens when you are seen.
