Coeliac Plexus Block

Hi, my Mum was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer Oct 2022.  She has had a round of chemotherapy which didn’t reduce the tumour and now it has spread behind her umbilical in her abdomen.  (Mum has decided to cease chemotherapy) Mum was admitted to hospital a few weeks ago with severe abdominal and back pain.  She is currently on 60mg of Oxconton and has 20mg oral Oxynorm when needed 100mg Paracetamol and 20mg injection when the latter doesn’t seem to touch the pain.  Mum has been advised to have the Plexus Block.  We have been asking many nurses if they have heard of it and their responses have been ‘no’?

Please can you advise if the block is necessary?  I have been doing some research and the side affects and posts from patients online haven’t been positive.  All we want to know is the success rate of someone aged 74, whose strength isn’t as it used to be, has suffered with low blood pressure and has a leaking valve, having the block and it was successful.  Did the pain go away and the mortality rate.

Please can you help?

thank you so much.  S

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to read about your mum. This must be a difficult time for you all.

As nurses we  are unable to give a medical opinion on whether your mum should have a plexus block to try and manage her pain as we are not involved in her clinical care. We always suggest patients discuss the best treatment options available with their specialist team who are familiar with all her medical details.

I imagine your mum has a palliative care team involved in her care. They are often known as the Macmillan team. These specialist nurses and doctors are experts in controlling cancer symptoms, such as pain They can prescribe medications that may help with your mum's symptoms.  If she does not have a palliative care team involved in her care you could ask her GP to refer her.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
