  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

The HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is a very common virus that is spread by skin-to-skin contact. The vast majority of the population will be exposed to this virus at some point in their life.

There are many types of HPV and most of them will not cause serious harm. However, a few types of HPV can cause the cells that line the surface of the cervix to become abnormal which can over time become cancer but this could take many years.

The aim of our screening programme is to identify any abnormal cells, treat them and then monitor them until they go back to normal.

Your own immunity will normally get rid of this virus but this can take two years and sometimes a bit longer. There is nothing you can do to get rid of it other than trying to lead a healthy lifestyle and not smoke as this can make it harder for your body to clear the virus.

Taking part in the NHS Cervical Screening programme ensures that women greatly reduce their risk of developing cervical cancer. This is because they are routinely tested for high-risk HPV.

At your colposcopy appointment, the colposcopist will be able to look at your cervix with a microscope and will probably take some biopsies. They may offer you treatment on that day or invite you for an appointment at a later date.

Try not to worry and stay away from Google as it is so general. If you do want more information then I would visit Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust website. There is some information about what to expect at a colposcopy appointment here and there is some more information about the HPV virus here

I hope this helps. Try not to worry and if you have further questions do get back to us or give us a ring. Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
