Abnormal smears three years in a row - treatment?

Hi :)

I am 27 - have had 3 smears.

Smear 1: HPV - watch and wait. Next smear in 1 year.

Smear 2: HPV - colposcopy and biopsy x 3 = CIN1

Smear 3: HPV - abnormal cells, referred to colposcopy again (will likely have more biopsies - appointment is next week after a 12 week delay on my results)

Am I right to assume that I will be offered a LLETZ or similar procedure (if I still have evidence of CIN1)?

Hoping there has been no progression, but if it has not got better, can I opt to have LLETZ?

Thank you in advance

  • Hello Ackitche and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you are needing to go back to colposcopy again and appreciate this can cause some worry.

As I am sure you are aware the cervical screening programme follows very strict guidelines when it comes to follow up and treatment. Usually HPV clears in the body within 2 years and along with this if there are any mild cell changes as in the case of CIN 1 these are cleared at the same time.

If after 2 years of follow up the CIN 1 remains a treatment such as LLETZ is usually offered although some people may choose to continue with watch and wait.

Wait and see what they have to say at colposcopy and be led by them. Do ask them any questions you have and share any concerns at the same time.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
