Ovarian Ultrasound Query

Hi!

I’m looking for some advice.

I recently had a blood test because I was experiencing tummy trouble when running. To be thorough, the doctor asked for my CA125 level to be checked. She called yesterday to say that my level is higher than it should be (46) and that this might be indicative of ovarian cancer. She is asking for an “urgent ultrasound” but has given a timeline of 2 weeks that I can expect to wait for an appointment to come through.

I know that elevated CA125 levels can be caused by a range of things (and I do have PCOS) but I’m obviously worried about the possibility of cancer. My question is: is a two week wait time for an “urgent” ultrasound a problem? Should I try to get a private scan to be seen sooner?

Thank you.

  • I had the same phone call last September it really shocks you so I know how you feel I was on the 2 week wait but I'm sure my appointment came sooner than that ,I don't think it would make much difference being seen quicker to be fair plus it might knock you back down the NHS list if you inform them you are going private for your scan ,I'm only guessing but you never know .

  • I had exactly this situation a few months ago, my CA125 came back raised at 141. This really panicked me and I paid for a private well woman scan which I got a lot sooner than the nhs 2ww.

I had results from scan in hand and took these to my gp the following day who acted on the scan results straight away and fast tracked me to gynae.

I suppose its only if the private scan shows anything that your gp can move things along (which mine did). I still kept my nhs scan app, gp said it was a good idea for comparison.

    Hope this helps

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

It can be an anxious time waiting for tests to be done but the 2 week wait is the quickest and most urgent way to get tests done on the NHS.

Whilst some people may choose to pay private to get tests done sooner, this isn't always necessary and sometimes the wait time may be very similar.

As you have said yourself a raised ca125 indicates inflammation in the pelvis region but this can be caused by lots of different things other than a cancer. The doctor is referring you urgently just to be thorough. The majority of people referred on a 2 week pathway won't go on to be diagnosed with a cancer.

I hope you know more about your situation soon and that everything will be okay for you.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Thanks Naomi and everyone for your responses, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I’ve got my scan date through for two weeks’ time - which feels like a long way away! Is two weeks a timeframe that would have a significant impact on a diagnosis? I know it’s unlikely that it will be cancer but, if it is, I worry that wait time to be seen could have an impact further along the road.

    Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for your further post,

As you say, it is unlikely to be cancer. Even if it was, a two weeks timeframe would not change whatever treatment would then be recommended.

So, try not to overthink, and keep yourself busy and occupied in the meantime.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
