Check up periods after throat cancer

I was traeted for throat cancer and the last treatment was the end of February 2021 I saw my consultant every now and again and last saw him in abt Feb 2022. I have had no contact with the hospital since that date. My question is how often do I or should I have a check up. Is 18 months Ok or should I try to get them going? It is difficult to speak to them.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am afraid that we don't how often and for how long you should be followed up. This will depend on your individual situation for example how well you responded to the treatment you had.

The best thing to do now is to contact your cancer team. You could do this by calling the cancer specialist nurse who would have supported you through your treatment. If you do not have the details of this nurse then ask to speak to the consultant's (the doctor who was in charge of your overall cancer care) secretary about this, via the hospital switchboard.

It is possible that you were discharged from the hospital team's follow-up. However, I don't if this is the case, and I can appreciate you want to know more about it. I hope you are able to speak to someone soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Caroline
