Waiting 6 months still no appointment

Hi my husband saw his dr before Xmas who referred him for an account at the hospital as he has been having ongoing diarrhoea with blood he still hasn’t had a appointment I rang the hospital which wasn’t easy got told he wasn’t on list then I spoke to a lovely lady who Confirmed he was and has been since 26/12/22 she was from referrals rang hospital who she told me he is on the list for who said yes but can’t give him a time of when to be seen explained he is getting worse with his symptoms she just said well he will need to see the dr and get a new referral ?? Managed to get him  phone one this Friday and hope he is hurried up on list what I’m concerned about is the amount of anti diarrhoea tablets he takes daily and how long he has been waiting surely if blood it should be classed as a priority appointment I’m worried it’s colon cancer as a friends husband had this and by time he got his appointment it was diagnosed is there any way of speeding up appointments?

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms your husband has been having and how long it is taking to be seen. This is understandably a worrying time for you both.

There are different referral pathways for people who are seen in a specialist clinic within the NHS. The quickest route is the suspected cancer pathway (known as 2-week wait) but patients need to meet the set criteria to be referred and accepted onto this referral pathway.

Your husband's GP surgery will know the type of referral that has been made for him and if this does need upgrading the GP should be able to do this.

It is really important your husband explains all his symptoms to the GP. They can assess him and if needed run some more tests that also may help speed up the referral process.

Do remember there are other inflammatory bowel conditions that aren't cancer but still can cause a change in bowel habits and blood in the stools. It will only be further tests that will be able to say for sure what is going on in the case of your husband and get him the best treatment to manage this.

I hope the appointment goes well on Friday and that your husband is seen and gets some answers very soon.

All the best to you both

    Naomi

  • Thank you and I know I’m probably overthinking the worst fingers crossed he gets seen quickly and nothing serious
