High grade changes

I’ve had a letter stating that my smear test has come back saying I have high grade changes again (not cancer). I have an appointment to discuss the above and also discuss a future management plan which may include treatment. 

This has made me very nervous and just wondered if anyone has been through the same.

    Hi, hope you’re okay and sorry to hear this. I am literally about to have a colposcopy this PM for the same reason. I don’t know what my cell changes are, just hoping they’re not cancer. My appointment was meant to be on Wednesday but I got a cancellation one this morning. I’ve had a very anxious week of waiting, especially as I had my smear in April and it took them this long to process the result. I had had another smear last year which was routine, and I had tested positive for HPV but no abnormal cells, so whatever this is, it’s progressed quickly for me as I’ve gone straight to high grade. My understanding is at the appointment for colposcopy I will also get treatment if possible. 
    If it helps, I’ve seen lots of women have this and then they have treatment and it’s fine - apparently very common. Hope that helps even a little xx

    You have posted on the ask the nurses section of the forum but you may get more replies from other's in the same position as you if you also post on a different thread.

    It can be a worry to get an abnormal test result but do bear in mind the cervical screening programme is all about preventing cancer. By picking up abnormal cells early these can be either monitored or treated (removed) until everything returns to normal.

    As you say abnormal cells aren't cancer but if left undetected, may turn into cancer over time. At your appointment in colposcopy they will be able to take a closer look at the cervix and take a biopsy if needed that can confirm the type of abnormal cell. Sometimes they will offer a treatment such as LLETZ that you can read about here at the same time. However there are times they will wait for the biopsy results before deciding on the best treatment.

    Try not to worry, so many other people will be receiving similar results to you at this point in time and the important thing is that you attend your appointment so a plan can be made to best manage this.

    The team involved in your care will explain things every step of the way so do ask them any questions you have.
