Lletz procedure

I had LLETZ procedure done on 12th June, only 4 days ago. Everything seems to be healing well but nothing was really explained about it to me, i saw on my notes that my previous biopsy has shown abnormalities CIN 2&3, I'm assuming thats bad?

Anyway he said to me that there was a possibility that i might need a hysterectomy if this procedure didn't work! which sounded extremely scary to me, is that normal? Why would i need a hysterectomy? And why would LLETZ not work? I'm confused as thought that was used to remove the abnormalities? Or is it only another biopsy?

Someone please help me, I'm going out of mind with worry. T.I.A x

  • I was told I have cin 3 on Friday, 6 weeks after having the lleetz procedure.

I havnt been told anything else apart from I have to have another smear in october.   I'm terrified, is cin3 serious?  There is no information given regarding the diagnosis

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I realise that this must be a worrying time for you.

The biopsy showed you have CIN 3 and you had treatment (the LLETZ ) to remove the abnormal area.  You do not have cancer.

However, because of this, you need to be seen in 6 months to be screened again. It's very important that you go to this appointment. The chances are that you won't have any further problems. Treatment is successful in more than 4 out of 5 women. If the abnormal cells do come back you will need to have more treatment.

Be reassured that attending your screening when you are invited reduces the risk of you ever getting cervical cancer.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely

  • Hello WeeLozzie and thanks for posting

It can be an anxious time undergoing tests and treatment and isn't unusual to be left with some questions about what is going on.

The important thing to remember with cervical screening is that it is all about prevention. By picking up and treating any abnormality at an early stage where it can be treated to prevent abnormal cells turning to cancer.

CIN here stands for Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia the most common type of abnormal cells in the cervix confirmed through the biopsy. CIN2 and 3 usually require treatment such as LLETZ to prevent these pre- cancerous cells turning into cancer. Sometimes more than one LLETZ treatment is needed to remove the abnormality and in some cases further treatment such as a cone biopsy or hysterectomy is needed if previous treatments haven't worked, there is a large area of abnormality or the cells are very close to becoming cancerous.

Easier said than done but try not to worry or let your mind run away with you. Hopefully this LLETZ will remove the abnormality but if when they re-screen you ( at what they is known as test of cure when they re check the cervix) they find there is still some abnormal cells they will then discuss what the next steps may be with you.

We have a section of information about the different treatments for pre cancerous cervical cells here.

I hope this is helpful and puts you mind at ease slightly. Please get back in touch if needed.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number is 0808 800 4040 and we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Thank you so much for your reply, i think its been because not much has been explained to me, all he said was aboit sending another sample to the lab for testing and then mentioning the hysterectomy i just panicked thinking the worst was happening. My smear test was late and had to actually chase it up myself, but it came back clear, i was only referred to Gynecology because i was bleeding while getting the smear done and Gynecology noticed some inflammation in my cervix so done a biopsy which picked up the abnormal cells.

  • I'm not sure myself, they haven't explained a single thing to me about it all.

  • Yes i know I do not have cancer, i was looking for some people with positive stories to share in the hopes it would put my mind to rest. I have never missed a smear and had to actually chase the last one up as they had me in wrong recall for them after being HPV positive so i definitely wont miss any appointments, thank you.
