Mouth Biopsy 13 week wait

I had a mouth biopsy appointment for potential cancer on April 6th. My appointment for results is on July 5th. That seems like a excessive wait for such a scary thing and I'm not only stressed that I could have cancer, I'm stressed that if I do, it's only getting worse. I'm not sure if it means I'm such a low priority that I don't need an appointment any time soon and thry know I'm fine. I had a two week referral for potential Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) so they could be diagnosing that instead of cancer. I'm just confused and don't want to waste anyone's time. Sorry for the incoherent rambing but is this normal?

  • I know some biopsy results can take a couple of months, but a 13 week wait does sound unusually long. Perhaps the NHS is still trying to catch up with the backlog; I recently had to wait three months just to discuss the results of a cardiac CT scan.

  • The backlog is somewhat forgivable considering what the NHS is put through. I think for test results, you should have the option for email results and a then optional but recommended follow-up appointment

  • Hello Tom_S and thanks for posting,

I appreciate that waiting for biopsy results can be an unsettling time.

When biopsy results are sent off they can be flagged as urgent or non-urgent, but how quickly they are looked at depends on capacity in the local laboratories. I'm afraid we aren't sure what normal is at the moment in the different areas of the country. But unfortunately, there are some capacity shortfalls and the fact that it can be worrying to wait isn't generally taken into account.

I am not sure what was said about how long you would have to wait, but I think it is fair enough to chase things up especially if nothing was said or you were given the impression that you would have heard by now.

You could try phoning the consultant's secretary (via switchboard), they can't give out results but might be able to arrange for you to speak to the consultant sooner. You could try the hospital Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) to find out if they can help. The NHS website explains more about PALS here

Please get back to us if you need to. You can call us on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Sorry for the late response. I ended up waiting for the appointment. The problem in my mouth is easily fixable by the dentist and more importantly, it isn't cancer! It's been a long and hard wait but it's made me think about life and how to live it better so I'm better off now.

    Thanks for the help!
