White Nipple Cyst Adenoma

Hi

I have just had my report back from attending the breast clinic on an urgent referal 3 weeks ago now. I under went an ultrasound at the time an had an examination by a Consultant. A mammogram will then be performed at the end of this Month due to me being on my period at the time so my breasts were very painful and tender to touch.

My letter states that the white pimple lump that i have in the centre of my right nipple is a tiny cyst adenoma and appears to be benign on examination and both my axillae were normal. The ultrasound of my nipple and areolar showed no intraductal lesion but a few subcentimetre cysts were noted only.

As i am now waiting on my mammogram this white pimple lump i have now had for exactly 7 weeks and it hasn't gone down. I have looked up what an adenoma of the nipple is and it's coming up as a rare condition when in the nipple and these sometimes can mimic a carcinoma of the breast being cancer. I am now really scared and don't know what to think as depending on my mammogram results when i have one done i am thinking that this will need a biopsy of some sort as i doubt they are going to leave it in me when not 100% sure of what it is.

Are these quite rare? Mine has come up out of no-where and i am concerned that my last mammogram performed in November 2021 when the plate came down very badly on right nipple has now caused this and given me some sort of radiation there, which is why 18 month's on i now have this in my nipple.

I am just so worried and i don't know what the next steps will be and most of all i am terrified if a punch biopsy will be needed and the pain from this in such a sensitive area. Every day feel's like waiting a month and i am worried it may be cancer. :(

  • Hello Amya and thanks for posting,

I am sorry that you are going through a worrying time.

Nipple adenomas are rare but benign (noncancerous) growths. Like you, I have read that they can sometimes cause a rash on the nipple that can mimic breast cancer but nipple adenomas don't always cause a rash - some just cause a small growth.

It isn't known why nipple adenomas occur but I don't think your previous mammogram is the cause.

I appreciate that uncertainty can be difficult to live with, but only the breast clinic team can tell you if a biopsy will be needed and they will probably need the results of your next mammogram to help them decide.   Bear in mind that if a biopsy is required, a local anesthetic will be used first to numb the area. The anticipation of having any medical procedure is often worse than it turns out to be in real life but for now try not to let it prey on your thoughts and keep an open mind. Do whatever works to distract you from the worry and help you to relax until the breast clinic team can tell you more.
