CA125 elevated again with pathological cyst

Hi everyone, I had raised CA125 last month (40) so not high so was sent to ultrasound where they have found what looks to be a pathological cyst/endometrium outside my ovary only very small so recommended CA125 repeated and repeat unltrasound, my CA125 has gone up to 51 in that time and my follow up ultrasound is on Saturday. Is it possible it's the cyst raising the levels and they will leave it be or has anyone been in a simile last situation? I have endometriosis I'm not sure if it was worth mentioning and I'm 34 - thank you all xx

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I'm glad that your symptoms have been investigated and that there is nothing of any concern on your scan.

The CA125 blood tests measure levels of inflammation in a woman's pelvic area. This can be caused by many things including ovarian cysts and endometriosis. If the cyst grows or the endometriosis changes this could cause the CA125 range to go up or down.

Here is some information on ovarian cysts, and here is the link to Endometriosis UK.

Others may come forward with similar situations but do remember this can be quite individual to them.

Take care and hopefully, you will know more soon.

    Sarah.

  • Hi

I'm following this as I am waiting for my repeat CA125 result, first one was 141 and they cannot find a reason apart from the endometrioma cyst I have which they are suspecting as cancerous given the level quite high.

I am due to have a full hysterectomy, on urgent wait list currently under MDT recommendation.

Hope scan goes OK on Saturday please update your post as I'm.in similar position.

    Thanks

  • Hi! I've been this morning, no sign or change but my husband was with me and he saw that it looks hollow which is good I think! Not sure what the follow up will be until next week when I hear from the doctor xx

  • That sounds positive.

In regards to endometriosis this can raise your CA125 so hopefully it's just that.

Hope your gp appointment goes well next week and you have a plan that puts you at ease xx

  • Thank you so much that's reassuring

  • Hi! My doctor has said the radiologist wants an MRI done after seeing the second scan which they said was essentially the same, now I’m worried xx

  • Hi

Do you have a date for your MRI?

I had to have a CT and a hysteroscopy following my scan a few weeks ago now and my 2nd CA125 did come back raised. I'm now booked in for surgery on 27th June and I will have an omental biopsy at the same time as Hysterectomy.

I'm absolutely terrified and after the surgery I have a few more weeks of waiting to find out results and if I need chemo.

I'm wishing you luck with your investigations and hopefully all will be a benign simple fix for you x

  • No no date yet I’m guessing I’ll just get a letter, it will be months away I’m sure!

your having a hysterectomy? Is that due to the endometrioma or have they diagnosed you with ovarian cancer? I’m sorry for the questions xx

wishing you the best on luck for the 27th , I’ll pop back here to see how it went for you and thank you so much for taking the time to reply xxx

  • Thank you

Yes a total hysterectomy abdominal and removal of tubes and ovaries. I've not yet been diagnosed with Ovarian cancer.

MDT have strongly suggested full hysterectomy as they have done lots of scans and biopsies and cannot find a reason for the CA125 to be and to remain high so they are suspecting that the endometrioma/cyst could be cancerous, its to eliminate risk and I think that's why they are carrying out a omental biopsy during hysterectomy as well.

I have to wait a couple of weeks for biopsy results of cyst and omental biopsy after surgery so that will be a very stressful wait.

Being forced into a surgical menopause is another thing I'll face as well when I'm not even perimenopause. And a 12 week recovery as its being done by open incision incase it is cancerous.

2 weeks to go then road to recovery xx
