Help

I found a lump 6 months ago and got it checked and they did an ultrasound. Said everything was fine. Found another one so went back, again couldn't see anything on ultrasound so they did a needle aspiration. Results came back as likely cancerous, so had a mammogram and a tomography and nothing is seen, now had an MRI with the contrast and that is also fine they said. Just had a core biopsy today, why can't anything be seen if I have what they said were cancerous suspicious cells??? Is this possible to have breast cancer but not see it on any imaging??? I'm 39.

  • Hi Me652 and thanks for posting.

It sounds like you are having a worrying time at the moment.

Tests such as scans can suggest cancer is present but only a biopsy can make a definite diagnosis. It is also possible for breast cancer cells to be present, but for it not to be picked up on scans.  There can be several reasons for this.

Dense breast tissue, which tend to be found in younger women, can make it more difficult to see lumps or abnormalities in breasts during a scan.  Breasts are made up of milk glands, milk ducts, glandular and fatty tissue. Dense breasts are made up of more glandular/fibrous tissue than fatty tissue.

Some early breast cancers can be more difficult to detect when you have a mammogram or ultrasound scan.  There are also some types of breast cancer which may be more difficult to see such as invasive lobular breast cancer, which you can read more about here.

You said you have had a needle aspiration and now a core biopsy.  The results of this biopsy should give you some more answers, and hopefully you will receive these results soon.  Until then try to keep your mind busy so you don't worry too much.

Some people find it useful to talk to friends and family about what is happening, and you can call our helpline to talk things through with one of our nurses.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
