Total confusion after follow up biopsy results today...

Hi everyone

I'm new here and wondered if I could reach our for help? I had a very falt nipple and some discharge, and was reffered to my local breast clinic. I had a mammogram and ultrasound after which I also had a biopsy. I had two lumps, one which was a cyst and drained, the other they were unsure about hence the biopsy. I went for my results today and am really confused. The consultant said the lump isn't cancerous but that they want to remove it anyway under general anaethetic, he used a word that sounded a little like pampil/pamphil...and explained that my milk ducts would be gone and my nipple might look a little different. He left (my husband was relieved, I was confused) and a lovely nurse came in to do pre operation swabs and I asked her, and she said it was a little bit like looking at a tomato- when you put a needle in a tomato you might get a seed, pulp or skin to look at, but if you get the whole tomato you can make sure it is just a tomato or something else. So are they checking to make sure it absolutely isn't malignant or is it just good practice? It's called a Sub-Areolar Duct Excision Microdochectomy??? My husband is so happy, and telling colleagues it's good news whereas I feel very differently...Am I being a drama queen? Any advice would be really cherished xxx

  • Here and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you have been left confused after your biopsy results appointment.

Papillomas are a benign (non-cancerous) breast condition which we have more information about here.

The surgical procedure your doctor has suggested is used to remove the whole milk duct (microdochectomy). Sometimes atypical (not normal) cells are associated with Papillomas so it is good practice to remove the whole duct so they can look at all of its cells to check and see if they have changed in any way.

Here is some information on Papilloma from the Breast Cancer Now charity which covers all things breast. Do scroll down for some information about microdochectomy surgery.

I hope this is clearer for you Sunflower, do take care of yourself.

If you want to call our nurse helpline to talk any of this through then ring  Freephone 0808 800 4040. Our lines are open from 9 till 5 Monday to Friday, but not Bank Holidays.

    Sarah.
