I can appreciate that being sent for an urgent gynaecology appointment is unsettling but very often these urgent referrals are done to be on the safe side and rule anything serious out.  

This raised red area needs to be investigated so I don't think being referred before your smear result is a reason to worry. I expect your doctor wants a specialist to examine you to be sure.
