Small cell lung cancer

My partner has small cell lung cancer and has just fininshed treatment of 4 x Chemotherapy (every 3 weeks) and 30 radiotherapy (10 a week over 3 weeks).

The consultant has told him he has came through it well and no further treatment however he was offered PCI. He is worried how this would affect his memory. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

There are side effects associated with prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) which are explained here.  As you will see radiotherapy to the brain may affect memory loss or difficulty concentrating.

Your partner's doctors can explain more about this. They will discuss with him the risk of this happening compared to the benefit of having PCI. The effects on memory are more likely to happen in older people who have this treatment. If your partner has a specialist nurse involved in his care, then perhaps they can provide you both with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

Give us a ring if you would like to talk any of this over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
