Any thoughts!

Over 20 years ago, accidentally, an ovarian cyst was found. Nothing happened for over 20 years. I requested a check to be made on it. The consultant at the time stated I needed an urgent operation and to remove both ovaries. This was to be done in October 2022. I arrived for the operation. A  different consultant met with me on arrival. His opening statement was 'I don't think you have been told everything. You could die in this operation. If I were you I would not have it done.'  I didn't!  Just recently I had a CA125 blood test. Result being 43. In 2018 it was 33. I had a private test in 2021 and it was 36. This week I met another consultant who wants to operate. No evidence of cancer but still 7cm in diameter. CA125 43. Don't know what to do. It has been left that in 4 months I have another CA 125 test and scan. I am scared!

  • Hi

Do you know what type of cyst it is? I have a 6cm cyst on my right ovary and awaiting a plan, seeing consultant on 1st June as they had an MDT yesterday then booked me in for consultation.

Why would they say you could die in the operation? This has freaked me out a bit as I know I will likely need at least my ovaries removed and probably my uterus. My CA125 is 141 but I've not yet been told it's cancer.

  • My you are coping with a lot. Thinking of you. Please let me know how you get on. It was all a shock! Just remember thinking I have not said 'goodbye' to my brother! I lost the plot mentally!!!

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am so sorry that you are in this situation, but as a nurse team, we are unable to give you a second opinion on what you should do.

I am glad that there is no suspicion of cancer and that it is an ovarian cyst. These are common in women but often disperse. Sometimes they can grow and cause symptoms, at this point, a doctor might decide to remove it. This is not because they think it is, or has, become cancerous but because of the side effects from it like pain. Here is the NHS information on ovarian cysts.

The CA125 test is not a reliable test for cancer but can show that there is inflammation in the pelvic area. An ovarian cyst can cause changes in this result as can many other non-cancerous conditions.

I think it is important for you to go back to your hospital team with any further questions that you have. You will then be in a better position to make an informed choice about the surgery.

Take care, and I hope you get the information you need soon.

    Sarah.

  • Thank you for taking the time to respond. I feel.in a very difficult position. I amnthinking if thete is a further incrrase in the CA 125 in 4 months then I agree. Rapidly reaching the point where I want it done. Hard to cope with this yo, yoing! Not sure in these circumstances how you make an informed decision! It took a lot of getting over emotionally as to how I was spoken with. I was shocked.

Thank you again. What a great site this is. Thank you.
