Confusion regarding swollen lymph nodes

I've had a swollen node in my neck for around 2 months, had an ultrasound and all was fine but since I've been diagnosed with epididymitis, the lymph nodes in my groin and armpit have swollen.

Had a course of general antibiotics and a blood test, tumour markers were fine but my livers enzymes are slightly raised, the antibiotics didn't have any effect on the lymph nodes whatsoever and I've developed a pain on the right side of my rib cage.

My doctor said the cause was probably infection even though my bloods and urine tests didn't find an infection.

Am I right to be paranoid or am I just over thinking things.

I've barely slept in 2 months and cannot get an appointment for 2 weeks

Help

  • Hi.

I would try to relax a little - the Dr saw no reason for too much concern even with the blood results. Blood test results hold an AWFUL lot of information, and those tumour markers would be the real red flag in terms of cancer.

there's no doubt something wrong for you to be feeling pain, but try your best not to fret too much at this stage

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Sometimes lymph nodes come up in response to a recent bacterial or viral infection elsewhere in the body even when a person feels well. It can take several weeks for them to go down and sometimes they may never go back to their original size.

It sounds like the GP was thorough in sending you for an ultrasound as this is usually the first step if someone has nodes that have been raised for some time. If there had been anything of concern on an ultrasound, the next step would usually be a biopsy, but it sounds that this wasn't necessary, as nothing untoward was seen.

The GP should receive a copy of the ultrasound report, so do have a chat with them about your concerns and what it said.  This will hopefully reassure you that nothing concerning was found.

Liver enzymes can sometimes be raised when you take antibiotics. Usually if the bloods are repeated in a couple of weeks the levels usually return to normal.

I hope this is of use. If we can help in any other way please do contact us again. If you would prefer to speak to one of the nurses directly, you can telephone us on 0808 800 4040. We are here from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.
