Spitz nevus

Hi, im a 32 year old female

I've just had a phone call from the dermatologist with the results of my sample taken over 8 weeks ago. Originally it was thought to be a clear cell ancanthoma so I wasn't too concerned.
I was told the results are a Spitz Nevus and that this is not cancerous which automatically put my mind at ease but then she dermatologist said that the report suggests that I have some more skin taken for a bigger margin i believe to confirm. I'm left feeling confused as to which diagnosis this is. I've read that the other type is a melanoma so I'm now worried sick as if it turns out to be one I've had this on my leg for 3 years :(

the spitz has never got any bigger in those 3 years so not sure if that is a positive sign ?

any help is greatly welcomed !

  • Hello there and thanks for getting back in touch.

I am pleased you have spoken with the specialist although I appreciate what an anxious time must be for you, needing more treatment and another wait for answers.

Try not to over think things if you can though. As you have been told by the dermatologist a spitz nevus is benign (not cancer) but because the cells can look so similar to melanoma cells it needs a second opinion. As well as this usually a larger margin of tissue is recommended so it can be closely examined under the microscope, just to be sure.

We have a section of information about this here.

Do also remember whilst you have had this for a while it hasn't changed in that time, often patients would notice a change in size, colour and shape in a mole with melanoma.

I really hope you have a definite answer soon.

    Take care

    Naomi
