Cancer misdiagnosed

Hello - my granddad has been in hospital for constapation - today my mum gets a call say that when they were doing a scan they caught shadowing on the lungs. They informed my mum that my grandad has terminal lung cancer and only a few weeks to live, my mum asks if they had done any biopsy or bloodwork and was informed that she was a specialist and didn't need to... a hour later Mum gets a call back to say another specialist has seen the scan and actually my grandad is completely fine - no cancer - just needs to come back in 8 weeks for another x ray. We now don't trust anything we are being told and feel something is not right? Does anyone have any advice?

  • Oh my goodness I'd be horrified with what you've gone through like you say something doesn't seem right at all ,I really hope things go well and you get some answers x

  • Hello Loulouandlola and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about what has happened and can understand why you and your family don't know who to trust as a result.

I think it would be a good idea to speak to one of these doctors again and ask them to explain how this mix-up has happened. Understanding more about this might help to restore your trust and I think your family and grandad are entitled to a proper explanation.

Hospitals have Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS) that might be able to help. You can read more about them on the NHS website at this link

I hope your family is able to get a better understanding of what led to this situation and that everything is ok with your grandad.

Please give us a call if you want to talk anything over.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around from 9-5 weekdays.

    Wishing you the best,

    Julia
