Letrozole effect on hands

Hi,

I was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in October 2021, I had chemotherapy (EC, Paclitaxel and Docetaxel - i had an allergic reaction to the Paclitaxel), then double mastectomy and reconstruction, followed by radiotherapy, and phesgo injections- with my active treatment finishing in January of this year. I was put onto Letrozole in July 2022 and had been coping quite well, but recently I have been getting swelling in my fingers - mainly the fingers I used to wear rings on, as well as tingling and numbness in my fingers.  My GP said I have ganglion cysts. Has anyone else experienced this and are there any ways to reduce the swelling?

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are having these problems with swelling and tingling in your hands.

Letrozole can cause these side effects, please see our page on this here and from the Breast Cancer Now page here.

Others may come forward with their own experience of side effects and letrozole, particularly if you move the post to one of the other topic areas like 'living with cancer'. You could also have a look at the Breast Cancer Now forum which may have other women in a similar situation to yours.

Do go back to your GP to talk these through, they should be able to offer advice on how to deal with the oedema and the tingling.

If you find it helpful do call us to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Sarah.

  • Weirdly, my wife was put on this just the other week. She had been on tamoxifen, but her last set of menopause tests came back as being post menopausal, so the change was made.

She came off it last week after calling her nurse as she had begun to experience just those very symptoms as yourself. She's seeing the oncologist this week or maybe it's next week, and she's to discuss it with him.

Such a coincidence that you posted this at this very time. The nurse wasn't/isn't sure if it is or isn't the letrozole causing this. but she's not to take it until she sees the oncologist.

She also had the same chemo regime as yourself, but hasn't had chemo for close to a year now or maybe it's over a year now. Probably the latter, so it wasn't that, unless those symptoms can appear a year down the road.

  • Hello ProfBaw,

It's nice to hear I'm not the only one, but I'm sorry your wife is experiencing this too.  I have held off contacting my oncologist, but may well do that soon.  Please let me know how your wife gets on and what her oncologist says. I hope it will be positive and that her symptoms calm down quickly. My chemo finished over a year ago too so I'm thinking it has to be something else!
