Worried wife

My husband was told he had 3rd stage lung cancer 2 years and 5 months ago, he was given 18 months to 2 years to live. He could not have chemo because he had a stroke and has very little mobility, they could not operate because the tumor was to close to his heart, he only had one session of radiotherapy. Over the last 5 months he has got gradually worse and is now on quite a bit of medication.  We went to see his consultant on 17th May and he has told us the cancer has gone.  Can this happen? And if so why is he so breathless, constantly coughing ?

  • Hello Angela and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your husband. I can't imagine how hard this situation must be for you both.

Sometimes cancers can respond very well to radiotherapy, if the cancer can't be seen on a scan this is usually called a  complete response. Rarely this can happen when doctors aren't expecting it to.

However, this does not guarantee that the cancer would not come back again and what may happen in the future.

There can be many reasons as to why your husband could be breathless and it is worth him discussing it with the doctors involved in his care or his GP to see if they have any thoughts as to the cause and how best to manage it.

The Charity Asthma+Lung UK have some tips on managing breathlessness which you both might find helpful to look at here

and whatever the cause of his breathlessness we have a page on our website here

If you would like to ring and chat any of this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to do so. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm

    Best wishes,

    Catherine

  • Thank you so much for your response, I am waiting for a phone call from our GP and also his oncologist at the hospital.
