Colon resection surgery

My dearest friend was diagnosed with Stage 3 (t4?) colon cancer a few months ago.

he is 72 but in pretty good health other than the tumour.

He had surgery and it was removed.  There was nothing need for a stoma and other than understandable aches and pains due to healing (keyhole surgery), he feels okay.  Oh but did say that having a poo is a different experience now, due to some of his rectum being removed too.

He had his follow up appointment with the surgeon, to discuss the lab results and way forward.
Surgeon said that he removed everything but that due to the type of cancer he had (can't remember the name of it), chemotherapy would not be appropriate as it doesn't work for his type.

He has a three month follow up.

I'm confused.  I had thought it was the protocol to giv chemotherapy as a prophylactic treatment.

wish I could remember the type of malignancy he had.

Can anyone help fill the gaps please?

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that your friend is recovering from surgery for bowel cancer and hope he is recovering well.

Not everyone needs to have chemotherapy after bowel surgery. But, I am afraid that I do not know why your friend doesn't need it. This is something he can ask his cancer team about. If he has a clinical nurse specialist, he can call and ask, he might need to leave a message and they will get back to him.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
