  • Hello and thank you for your post. I am sorry to learn that your recent test result and referral has triggered lot of worry.

CA125 is a chemical that circulates in the bloodstream and can sometimes be a marker for ovarian cancer. Women with ovarian cancer tend to have higher levels of CA125 in their blood than women who don't.  But CA125 can also be raised for other reasons that are not related to cancer. This can include fibroids, endometriosis, cysts, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

So when levels are raised they need to look into it but measuring CA125 levels isn't a reliable as a way of diagnosing what is wrong.

The gynaecologist may want to do more tests, for example a pelvic ultrasound scan, or a hysteroscopy, but for now I don't think anyone will be able to tell you more, it is a waiting game and often quite an unnerving time. If you can, try and keep an open mind, there are usually several possible explanations aside from cancer in situations like this.

I hope your appointment comes through soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
