Red flagged straight ti consultant

Hello I was red flagged ten days ago positive qfit and family history

have had bleeding for three years and lower back pain (which I put down to pregnancies) I went to Gp nearly 3 years ago they diagnosed fissure but refered me to hospital for peace of mind didn't get the appt until 2.5 years later.  Went to appt and met the consultant I thought I was getting a colonoscopy but she examined me and said she couldn't see fissure or feel piles so sent me for a qfit test which came back positive.

my Gp then red flagged refered me back to consultant directly- it's been 10 days and after talking to the consultants secretary she still hasn't looked at my results or referral she only works two days a week and is very busy. What is the protocol here I know that the cancer tracker system keeps an eye on the 2ww ref but who is keeping an eye on mine as I am not on that tracker system?

thanks so worried

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I appreciate what a worrying time this must be for you, especially after experiencing symptoms for such a long time. However a FIT test can come back positive for more reasons other than cancer, so try not to over think things too much for now.

People referred on the 2 week wait ( fast track, suspected cancer pathway) will usually have some contact from the hospital team within 2 weeks. Although with backlogs and already long waiting lists (as you have experienced yourself) some are having to wait a little longer.

No one here I am afraid can tell you much more about your referral so I would speak with your GP surgery to ask if you have been referred through the 2 week wait pathway or just to the consultant urgently, as they are 2 separate things.

As you have been assessed by the consultant who organised this FIT test result they will take a look and arrange the next steps. Usually a positive FIT will require a colonoscopy to explain where the bleeding may be coming from.

I hope you know more soon

    All the best

    Naomi
