Nephrostomy issues

Hi,

I'm currently helping with my mum's care. She has stage 4 cervical cancer (locally advanced). I'm just looking for some advice with her nephrostomy sites and how to help manage the areas so she's not in pain. She has 2 nephrostomies after having a blockage causing kidney failure. We've gone through the long painful processes of treatments and hospital trips over the last 5 months and we're at the limbo point where we are waiting for the next PET scan. At the moment she is finding the nephrostomy sites quite sore and the skin very sensitive where the dressings sit. Does anyone have any suggestions to ease this pain and make it more comfortable for her to get about and enjoy her days?

There is no infection (we've had that checked). It's just simple solutions were looking for to help manage the smaller issues of skin irritation to make her more comfortable.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I don't think we can be that specific, as ideally you need a district nurse or her GP Practice nurse to have a look at the skin area and assess it.

Sometimes dressings need to be replaced if sensitivity occurs. A non sting barrier film dressing can help. Opsite visible dressing is often used, or Drain-Guard dressing. Some of these need to be prescribed by your local Tissue Viability Nurse Specialist. Do ask the district nurse or GP Surgery if you would like the wound assessed by the Tissue Viability Nurse. There may be a hypoallergenic barrier cream (like ones used for nappy rash), then can be applied very sparingly, otherwise dressings won't adhere (stick) well. There are lignocaine gel (local anaesthetic gel) products, but this needs to be used under medical/nursing supervision.

Do seek some local nursing advice if you can.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda

  • That's great, I will definitely do that!

Thanks so much for a quick response
