Potential lymphoma for Mum with dementia

Mum is 84, has vascular dementia and lives in a great care home. She has some awareness and reasonbale quality of life. Following some concerns about lumps her CT report has come back indicating possible lymphoma above and below the diaphram and lesions on her spleen.

Mum has an advance directive not to have life prolonging treatment. As a family we need to help map a course of action. Medical conditions have always made her very anxious and interventionary treatment will likley impact her dementia, mental health and quality of life quite negatively.

However, some of our reading and investigation indcates that even at this potentai stage treatment can be both managable and effective.

We are keen to get as much infromation as possible before her follow up appointment to discuss in more detail what options she has for happens next. Any information or advice would be gratefully welcome.

  • Hi BenW and thanks for posting.

It sounds like your family are having a difficult time at the moment and I can understand you wanting to find out more about what may happen next.

When someone has an advance directive, it can cover different treatments and aspects of their care.  If they have chosen not to have life prolonging care, this may include treatments for cancer.

Your mum's doctor will be able to discuss the next steps and what the treatments may be, but if treatment were offered, it would usually include chemotherapy, radiotherapy and steroids.  You mention your mum has some awareness so she may want to part of these discussions too.

We have a section on our website here about different types of lymphoma which you may find helpful.  This includes information about stages, treatments and side effects.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel
