how much blood is too much blood in stool following c-scopy

I hate to ask a negative question after I had such a positive experience with the procedure, but I'm starting to get a little concerned. I've eaten a meal then felt the need to go, passed some fairly liquid stool but there was blood in it. This is to be expected as I had biopsies, but it's hard to tell just how much as it seemed blended in with the stool. I feel ok otherwise so hopefully this will heal overnight or quickly. Can anyone put my mind at rest?

  • It should reduce and then stop as it heals, contact the doctor if you're worried or if losing lots of blood go to A&E. l hope everything is fine soon

  • Hi Whophd and thanks for posting,

You're right that you can expect to see blood in your poo after having a colonoscopy and biopsies.  This will usually stop within a couple of days so try not to worry too much.

Colonoscopy is usually a very safe procedure, but if you notice an increase in bleeding, get a temperature or you are in a considerable amount of pain you should have been given a number to get in touch with.  If you haven't, you can contact the clinic where you had your procedure.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Rachel
