New painful hard lump after biopsy.

Hi hope someone could help. I had a biopsy over 2 weeks ago now on a lump which I previously couldn't feel (went in as my nipple had inverted and they found the lump on a scan). They took 3 biopsies and I had some very bad bleeding after and was in pain for about 3 days but then everything went back to normal, no pain and continued on as normal. 2 days ago my boob started to become very tender and now its so painful, very swollen and I can feel the lump which is very sore to touch. Is this normal?

On a side note I have had my results back and thankfully not cancer and just a complicated cyst and duct dysplasia.

They did say there could be discomfort for a few weeks but is this normal? My boob is rock hard now, I can't bend over or pick up my children.

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I would either get in touch with the breast clinic where you had the biopsy or your GP. You may find that if it is painful and swollen, you might have an infection that might be helped with a course of antibiotics.

It could just be a haematoma, a collection of blood located outside the blood vessels that may have developed after your biopsy but of course, I can't be sure.

The NHS at Lancashire teaching hospital have some useful information describing a haematoma which you can see here

We are unable to tell you what it is and as it is still causing you some discomfort three weeks after the procedure it would be helpful to have the area examined.

I do hope that it gets better soon.

    All the best,

    Catherine
