Colonoscopy prep diet question

I hope this is ok to post here, no other forum seemed appropriate.

Is it ok to eat fatty fish, Mackerel sardines or salmon, on the prep diet? The diet info i've been given is pretty vague. I've tried googling and the answer is yes or no depending on who is answering the question. Some hospitals say yes, others don't. The info I got from the endoscopy department just said 'fish' was ok. No distinction. But the diet advice seems to be low fat, which is also a problem because I'm only going to be eating protein at this rate. I'm a bit concerned. I understand the reason for this diet, but I don't want to be left starving for the next 3 days (appointment tuesday). Thanks

  • I have just has a colonoscopy and nurses where I had it done told me just white fish and not coloured fish..it's mostly a low fibre diet, white bread, white pasta, eggs and nothing with a high fibre content in it, hope this helps

  • To be honest I found the prep diet was pretty boring (& to my mind) all the low fibre/unhealthy stuff we're generally told to avoid or have in moderation!  It's worth doing it to the letter though as I felt it made the day/night when you drink the actual prep much easier & was told my colonoscopy was very good as bowel was so clean.  I stuck to bland, white bread, pasta, etc and drank plenty of water to stave off hunger.  Good luck + I hope all goes well for you!

  • Thanks

I've eaten a lot of chicken and tofu. I don't really eat white bread and pasta. I hope taht's not a problem

  • From my understanding it's really high fibre stuff you need to avoid - which sounds weird, but I think it's maybe that it stays in colon longer but I don't know, and anything that is red coloured like beets, berries, etc.  I didn't find the prep drink too bad - not great, but palatable.  It started to work pretty fast, so don't be at work or out of the house. I didn't have any cramps or pain and also, fortunately, didn't experience any issue during the procedure itself. Again, not nicest thing, but please don't worry about it - it's relatively quick and has to be done in order to get answers.  Good luck.

  • Thanks. I get it. Fingers crossed all is well.

What is weird is that the diarrhea type symptoms that sent me down this path have been 'in remission' since i had to change diet. Don't know if that means anything

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I see that you've been given some good advice from other forum users and I agree with them that it's best to follow the dietary advice you have received from the hospital.

You may also find it helpful to look on an NHS website here on diet before a colonoscopy

I hope this helps and that everything goes well for you.

    Best wishes,
