Rectal cancer friend needed

Hi

Anyone out there who has the same diagnosis as me.

I have rectal cancer with secondary in the groin and the inner pelvic wall.

Chemo didnt help so now its on to 28 radiation treatments and Chemo tabs 3000 mgs per day, starting on Monday.

I am a real baby when it comes to pain and I am so scared.

Any advise on how to protect ones self from burning in your private parts would be very welcome.

Currently I feel I have more questions than answers and cannot get cancer out my mind, it's with me all the time, is this normal?

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

You have posted on the 'ask the nurses' section of the forum which is fine, but you may find you get more replies from others in a similar situation to yourself if you post on a different thread.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It is understandable and normal to feel worried about having more treatment and how you will feel and may be affected.

The radiotherapy specialists will assess you and any side effects you have throughout your treatment. Do let them know about any worries you have ahead of starting and during treatment. The radiotherapy team will talk you through the possible side effects and will have suggestions on things that can help ease these. The 'about cancer' section of our website also has information about side effects here.

The area of skin and tissue where the radiotherapy is given is often damaged during treatment. This can cause radiotherapy burns which sometimes breakdowns the skin causing sores that can be painful. Moisturisers and creams are commonly used to help protect and settle the skin but do ask the radiotherapy team which ones are best to use. Likewise pain relief can also be prescribed and dressings given if needed.

Try and take things one step at a time rather than think too far ahead into the future for now.

Wishing you all the best but do get back in touch if you have more questions. The helpline is also here weekdays 9-5 on 0808 800 4040 if you would like to talk to one of us nurses over the phone.

    Take care

    Naomi
