Ovarian Cancer Concerns

I went to the doctors today to investigate pain around my right ovary and some other symptoms, assuming it may just be a cyst. I was then told because of the other symptoms, that I need blood tests to check for ovarian cancer and will have a scan in a few weeks. I'm 25 and honestly terrified. I've just come home from the blood tests at hospital, and now it's just a waiting game.. I had my first cervical screening a few months back which showed abnormal cells so I'm also waiting on a second check for that and I feel like I'm in a bit of a spiral now worried that I have cancer. Any advice on how to cope with this worry and how to approach this with my family and friends?

  • Hi , I am in a similar situation to yourself I too have had pain on my right side and other symptoms too , I have had my internal to which they said I had a bumpy uterus, I also had the blood test ca125 for ovarian cancer and that came back high I am currently waiting for my transvaginal ultrasound which I have on Monday , I am 46.. I have read everything going as to what else it could be other than this ...

my husband is the only one who knows what's going on .. I totally understand how you feel x

i hope all goes well for you x

  • Hello, so sorry to hear you're going through the same right now! Thank you for the well wishes, I'm hoping the same for you, it's so scary isn't it? I had my LCA125 blood test today along with a few others, so anxious for the results.

As women we know there are so many other things that could cause ovary/womb issues but your brain does just go to cancer every time doesn't it :( I have my fingers crossed for you that everything will be okay x

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are worried about ovarian cancer but be aware that it is more unusual to have this cancer at your age. It is more likely to affect women who are post menopausal.

Other gynaecological conditions like ovarian cysts, fibroids or endometriosis can also cause pain and are more common, but it is important your symptoms are investigated. These other gynaecological problems can also be picked up on these blood tests, so an ultrasound is good to help the doctor get a clearer picture of what is happening to you.

Abnormal cells on a smear are not cancer cells, they are cells which have changed. The cervical screening programme is about prevention so these abnormal cells are monitored or treated before they become a problem.

It is hard when we are worried about our health as it can be a struggle to focus on anything else. Trying to keep busy so that you are distracted can help time hopefully pass quicker until your appointment. Also, try to stay off the internet as Google can't assess you and know your situation, so it can end up causing more anxiety. Maybe you have a friend or family member you can talk this all through with who can support you until you know more.

Take care and if it is helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline call 0808 800 4040. The lines are open 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
