Fasting before radiotherapy

Hi, I'm new to this forum and came here to see if anyone has heard about or tried fasting prior to radiotherapy and if so, how they went about it. It seems there is ongoing research in this area, but I can't get anyone on medical team to give me any sort of opinion on it. I think the theory is that fasting before chemo or rt makes the treatment more effective and less damaging to healthy cells because the non-cancerous cells become stronger as they go into 'survival mode' - which cancer cells cannot do. Very non-technical way to explain it!

ive read research that says intermittent fasting has been shown to be as effective as aromatase inhibitors at preventing recurrence, which is pretty impressive in itself. But my question really is: how could this work for radiotherapy, since it's a daily event? Would it be good to fast for a day or two before starting the course (it's only nine days)? Would it be better not to eat immediately before morning rt? Or some other combination?

I'd be grateful to hear anyone's experience or advice. Thank you.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I can appreciate your question. There does seem to be some ongoing research going on looking at fasting and cancer. However until there is solid evidence to support this it is difficult for health professionals to give an opinion about it.

We always suggest patients speak with their team before undergoing any alternative diet to check they are happy for you to do so. If you do decide to fast make sure you still drink plenty of water and if you feel unwell at all to stop the fast.

There may be others on here who have carried out some sort of fasting during their cancer journey that may wish to share their story with you. However it is important to say that everyone is different so what is right for one person may not be for another. Fasting will not be suitable for everyone and in some cases may be dangerous and cause more harm than good.

We have a section about diets, fasting and cancer here that is worth you taking a look at.

    Best wishes
