Positive FIT test, really worried

I am totally freaking out and convinced that I have colon cancer, like totally convinced. I've suffered on and off for years and been put down to IBS. Recently I had a burping episode which tasted like blood and I thought that I was bleeding from back passage (turned out to be period type bleed) but I purchased a FOB test from Amazon which came back positive for bleeding. I purchased another and also FIT test which also shown positive. Doctor has referred me for colonoscopy within two weeks. I'm a mess. I've realised that I have symptoms that would indicate colon cancer including burping! Something I never even thought about and I do it all the time. I thought it was something everyone did. I also get indigestion a lot and heartburn. Episodes of constipation and diarrhoea but not that much that I would think was a massive concern. I am so upset and panicking so much I can't even hardly eat or drink

  • Hi, I wish you all the best. Have you ever actually see any blood in your stools? Or was it hidden? If you don't mind me asking what is you age range? And there are many other diseases that are much less severe than cancer that can cause there's symptoms. All you can do is stay positive and hope for the best. :)

  • Hi there. No I have never seen any blood in my stool. My stool is mainly light brown although can look darker now and again but I'm on and off iron tablets as I am also low iron (due to heavy periods). I am 43 years old.

I understand that there are other things that can point to these symptoms but I think I'm just reading lots of horror stories and putting two and two together. I honestly thought everyone burps a lot. I burp often after food and sometimes in between if I feel uncomfortable in the upper tummy. I also get heartburn that can feel sore all the way up to my throat.

im so upset and worried sick

  • Hello Mynameistaken and thanks for posting,

Having unexplained symptoms is often unsettling and I can appreciate you being upset just now. Do bear in mind that symptoms linked to cancer can occur for other reasons, so another explanation is always a possibility and may even be more likely.  Similarly, a positive FIT test only shows bleeding and not the reason why - a number of things can cause it.

Try not to dwell on the details of your symptoms, I don't think it will help you to work out what is causing them. It sounds like your doctor wants a colonoscopy to be sure about what is going on so you are probably going to have to wait it out until this can be done.

It can be hard to hold your nerve and I think a lot of people waiting for tests inevitably worry, but for now, try and keep an open mind and do what works best for you to cope and try and manage the stress of it all.

If you want to talk anything over please do give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays from 9-5.

    Wishing you the best,

  • This is why Google is the worst enemy when you are going through any sort of testing or health scare I advise you to stay off Google and keep in mind that what ever it is, it it much more likely to not be cancer. I just have one more question for you, did you do the FIT test while in your period by any chance??

  • Thank you. I keep flitting between being calm and rational thinking and then full on panic feeling. Trying not to Google stuff so will keep trying not to see horror stories.

I had my period about a week before. I also have adenomyosis which causes super heavy periods so that is mainly why I am low iron x

  • Thank you. I think I needed some rational thinking today as I'm having a wobble.
