Brain tumor

Good morning. My father discovered that his lung cancer has travelled to the brain.

He was already undergoing treatment for the lung cancer, tablets daily and a drip every 6 weeks. With tests showing that his tumours were shrinking.

He had to come off the tablets because they were comprising his heart. All his stats - kidney, heart, bloods etc are all showing fine.

Is there any other treatment available? Chemo - radiotherapy - radiosurgery ?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Chris,

My mum had radiotherapy for brain mets and it really helped. Your oncologists are the only ones who can say what's right for your dad though - assume you will be speaking with them?

Sending lots of love and strength to you all.

  • Hi, yes we have a conceltation on Thursday 11th.

His oncologist has never let him down before, we are just praying for news of treatment available.

    Thank you for the support.

  • Best of luck to you all. Most chemo doesn't cross the blood brain barrier so - very much a guess - but they'll probably keep the chemo for the main primary cancer. Steroids are also excellent at helping with inflammation on the brain. But I'm not an oncologist and every cancer is different. My mum has a small cell cancer.

It's a very tough journey for us isn't it? Sending lots of love and strength!

  • Thanks for the feedback and hope yous are doing well.

I'm hoping radiotherapy or someone alike can work.

Hes on tablets daily and an infusion every 6 weeks for the primary cancer, which showed the tumours were shrinking. Its a tuff road to get bad news after good.

  • It is tough. Jonnie irwin from the TV had his lung cancer travel to his brain and Linda Nolan undergoing radiotherapy for cancer traveling to brain, they are both hanging on in there!

Hope you getting plenty of support from Maggies, macmillan, local hospices etc x

  • That is positive news. Thank you.

It was a general consultant that broke the news to him.

I'm hoping the specialist on Thursday has options for us moving forward.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your father, it must be so disappointing to hear the cancer has spread to the brain whilst all the other tumours have been responding well to treatment.

As others have already posted to you, it is only the specialist team involved in your father's care who can say what the best next steps are for him. I read further down the thread that he has an appointment coming up soon so hopefully you will know more soon.

As others have also said there are several options that may be possible for brain tumours that you can read about here. I am sure the team will want to do all they can to manage this.

Do get back in touch or give us a buzz on 0808 800 4040, weekdays 9-5 if you prefer.

Best wishes to you and all the family

    Naomi

  • Thank you very much for your positive response.

We will await our meeting on Thursday.

His cancer doctor phoned yesterday and requested an emergency MRI scan and suggested that radiotherapy was the best option at this stage.

  • Hi.

Just an update. The MRI scan results showed multiple, some small some large. The large ones it maybe possible to use targeted therapy, i assume radiotherapy? The smaller ones are to small to treat but will be monotored.

The only complication his cancer doctor sees is that one is close to the spinal cord? She has told us that the neurology specialists are reviewing his case on Monday to see what is possible moving forward.

  • Hello and thank you for updating us on your father

His doctors will now wait for the neurologists opinion on Monday before deciding on a treatment plan.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
